In 1805, a Village Ordinance was published "for the better preventing
and extinguishing of fire in the Village of Athens." Hence, the beginning of the Athens Fire Department. Leather buckets, purchased by all Village residents led to the buying of 2 engines, one
to be located on either end of the village. In 1829, the Engine Co.#1, as it was known was joined by a Hook and Ladder Company,
later to named Brady H&L. In 1859, the Village reorganized, Engine 1 was renamed Makawomuc
Engine Co., Hook & Ladder Co. was renamed Brady, and a third Company was formed, the Morton Engine Co.
The Village operated this way until the Companies mutually merged in 2002. Part of the 5th Battalion, Athens
is assigned County ID #2 and responds from their new fire station located at 39 3rd Street.
